On June 20, 2005 Jina Haslam was straddling her bicycle at the side of the road near her home in Lamoine when she was hit and killed by a speeding car driven by an elderly lady. She was air-lifted to Eastern Maine Medical Center with fatal injuries. Her fight that day was to keep her organs viable for transplanting. Three middle-aged gentlemen now have a chance of life with her liver and kidneys. After two sleepless nights her grandmother Enid had a vision to build a new gymnasium in Jina's memory. Thus the Jina's Gym Fund was borne out of this tragedy.

Jina rarely let her hair down. Days before the accident she and her sister Angela visited the Beauty Salon. The other thing Jina would rarely do is let someone take her picture, so this shot of Jina is a double treasure

Jina was a bright, talented, focused 14-year old girl and a recent 8th grade graduate from Lamoine Consolidated School. She had attended that school since kindergarten. As a first year basketball player for Lamoine her amazing improvement and play of veteran, talented players helped the team win the Union 92 Championship. Throughout the season family, friends and fellow students cheered the team on from the tiny, crowded sidelines of the current Lamoine gymnasium. Many of the home games were canceled due to condensation on the floor and the games were moved to other schools.

As a first year contestant and co-captain on a gimpy leg from a slight birth defect and with shear determination, Jina achieved most improved on her 2004 cross country team, winning another Union 92 Championship. Her softball team also won the Union championship. From 5th to 7th grade she was a member of the State Championship Cheering team from Lamoine. Jina was a member of the chorus and an outstanding musician, playing four instruments. She competed at the state level in both band and chorus.

Jina received the highest average award in History and was an honor roll student. This past year Jina conquered a fear of flying when she joined her cousin on a trip to Florida to visit her paternal grandmother. Her fear of boats vanished when she joined her 8th grade classmates on a whitewater rafting trip.

Jina would have entered MDI High School, and her future plans included attending the University of Maine veterinarian program. Since the age of 8 Jina had worked at a local goat farm, helping deliver hundreds of baby goats, caring for the kids, and she could identify by name the entire herd. She ran the milking operation, made goat cheese, and could assist the attending vets. The weekend before her tragic death she ran the farm while the owner was away.

Jina was simply, remarkably, amazing.
